Kavanaugh Hearing: Lindsey Graham Rips Democratic Colleagues

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, exploded during Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Congressional hearing Thursday evening. Graham called the hearing, meant to investigate Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's accusations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, "the most unethical sham since I've been in politics."

"What you want to do is destroy this guy's life, hold this seat open and hope you win in 2020," he yelled at his Democratic colleagues across the dais. He then accused his left-leaning colleagues of wanting power. "I hope the American people can see through this sham that you knew about it and you held it. You had no intention of protecting Dr. Ford. None. She's as much of a victim as you," he said.

Graham next compared Kavanaugh's situation to Bill Cosby's. "You have interacted with professional women all your life, not one accusation. You're supposed to be Bill Cosby when you're a junior and senior in high school and all of a sudden you got over it. It's been my understanding that if you drug women and rape them for two years in high school you probably don't stop," he said.

Later, in a media scrum, Graham doubled down, telling reporters he's "more pissed" at Democrats than he had ever been. "I am not going to let an accusation that's not corroborated be outcome determinative when it comes to what I think is a record full of a life well-lived," Graham said of Kavanaugh.

He also accused reporters of bias. "Why don't you believe him? What's it about him that you don't want to believe?" He asked. "They tried to destroy this guy's life with one accusation after another," he said referring to the three women, including Dr. Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

Graham had a message for his Republican colleagues. "If you can ignore everything in this record—an allegation that's 35 years old, that's uncertain in time, place, date and no corroboration, if that's enough for you, God help us all as Republicans," he said. "Because this happens to us, but this never happens to them. Let me tell my Democratic friends, if this is the new norm, you better watch out for your nominees." It is unclear whether or not the Senator was making a threat.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders praised Graham for his tough language. "Lindsey Graham has more decency and courage than every Democrat member of the committee combined," she tweeted. "God bless him."
