‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ Critical Mode: Proof of Promises & Proof of Times Past Explained

Kingdom Hearts 3 update 1.05 released Tuesday night, adding Critical Mode and basic New Game+ features to the 2019 game. Alongside those changes, players may have noticed Proof of Promises and Proof of Times Past in their inventories. We’ll explain what each of those items mean and what they might tease about the future.

Proof of Promises

Upon loading a finished save or starting a New Game+ with Keyblades carried over, the Proof of Promises may be added to your inventory. It’s described as “a certificate for those who have collected all of the luck from worlds over.”

It’s assumed the Proof of Promises is a new item earned after collecting all 90 Lucky Emblems in a single save file, or by starting New Game+ with a secondary one on the same difficulty level. If, for example, you get the Proof of Promises on Standard and start a new game on Proud, the item won’t be unlocked. With the release of update 1.05, players should load their original save before starting a New Game+. This doubly ensures you’ll get Proof of Promises if you’re eligible.

Proof of Times Past

Proof of Times Past is simpler to explain, but harder to unlock. To get it, you must beat Kingdom Hearts 3 on Critical Mode. It’s described as “a certificate awarded to those who have endured the most difficult trial of them all.”

What do these Proofs mean?

For right now, all we know is that Proof of Promises and Proof of Times Past are ways of acknowledging that players have photographed every Lucky Emblem and beaten Critical Mode. This helps the player know what they’ve accomplished, and it might act as a simplified way for the game to track that data as well.

This isn’t the first time Proofs have been seen in a Kingdom Hearts game. The Proof of Connection, Proof of Nonexistence and Proof of Peace are earned by completing specific milestones in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix. All three Proofs are required to unlock the extended secret ending. It’s possible the Proof of Promises and Proof of Times Past set up a similar scenario in Kingdom Hearts 3. Considering Kingdom Hearts 3 story DLC is planned for release later this year, maybe clearing that content plus collecting these Proofs offers another Secret Movie. That’s all we know about the Kingdom Hearts 3 Critical Mode update for now.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is available now on PS4 and Xbox One. The Critical Mode update is live on both platforms.
