Kmart and Sears Closures: When Will They Close, How Many Stores Will Be Left?

Transformco, the parent company of Kmart and Sears has announced that it will be closing 96 stores. The liquidation sales will begin on December 2, 2019, and the stores are all expected to close by February 2020. After these closures, Transformco will only operate 182 stores.

Sears filed for bankruptcy in October 2018. Then, in February 2019, financier Edward Lampert bought Sears and planned to save 400 stores and 45,000 jobs. Lampert created Transform Holdco LLC to serve as the parent company of Sears and Kmart.

In August, Sears announced 26 store closures: "We will continue to evaluate our network of Sears and Kmart stores and cannot rule out additional store closures in the near term.

"Our goal remains to return the company to profitability and preserve as many jobs as possible in the communities we serve."

However, in October, Business Insider reported that Sears planned to close another 121 stores. The latest Sears statement has confirmed these closures.

Sears is a department store company selling homeware, clothing, electronics and more. It was founded 1893 when it was known as Sears, Roebuck, and Co. In 2000, the company owned 863 mall-based stores and an additional 1,200 retail stores.
