The 'L Word'

AS SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION under Ronald Reagan, Elizabeth Dole championed the "Liddy Light"-the additional brake light that has become standard equipment on all new cars. But now that her husband is running for president, Mrs. Dole wants to retire her childhood nickname. During an interview with "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl, she turned frosty when Stahl slipped and called her Liddy, in violation of ground rules she set banning the L word. Mrs. Dole's friends already know not to mention another nickname, "Sugar lips," a sobriquet she picked up during the Reagan years for her ability to charm members of Congress.
