When Is 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' Out? Netflix Release Date, Cast & More

Lady Chatterley's Lover, coming soon to Netflix, is the latest on-screen adaptation of the 1928 groundbreaking novel written by D.H. Lawrence.

The novel was first published in Italy and in France in 1929 before a censored version arrived in the United Kingdom in 1960. The book became notorious for its details of a romantic relationship between a young working-class man and an upper-class woman, and in particular for its explicit and detailed descriptions of sex and obscene language.

Netflix decided to adapt the book into a film that's set to be even steamier than the worldwide hit Bridgerton. It will feature a star-studded cast, directed by Mrs. America's and The Act's Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and written by Life of Pi's David Magee.

Newsweek has all the details we know about Lady Chatterley's Lover so far.

When Is 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' Out on Netflix?

Unfortunately it doesn't yet have a release date.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Autumn 2021, so hopefully an early 2022 premiere date will be on the cards.

Who Stars in 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' on Netflix?

Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin leads the cast as Lady Chatterley.

Corrin burst onto screens in 2020 with their incredible performance as Princess Diana in the fourth season of The Crown.

Corrin is also well known as Esme Winikus in Pennyworth and Jillian Jessup in Misbehaviour.

Skins star Jack O'Connell and up-and-coming actor Matthew Duckett have also been announced as being a part of the main cast, but their roles haven't yet been announced.

O'Connell is also known for his performances in the films Unbroken and Money Monster.

What Is 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' About?

The novel follows the story of Constance (Connie) Chatterley, who is unhappily married to a wealthy landowner, Sir Clifford Chatterley.

She embarks on an affair with the estate's gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors, and Connie is faced with the decision of ending her marriage and leaving her upper-class social status behind or choosing her passion and settling for less.

So far, Netflix has teased some small details about what to expect in the adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover.

The short, but tempting, synopsis reads: "Director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's romance drama is a re-telling of the classic D.H. Lawrence novel about a married woman who engages in a torrid affair with the estate gamekeeper."

Netflix doesn't shy away from explicit sex scenes (see Bridgerton, Sex Education and Sex/Life), so this film is something you might not want to watch with your parents.

The book itself was famously the focus of an obscenity trial: Regina v. Penguin Books, Ltd.

When Penguin Books sought to publish it in the UK, it was tried under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 because of the novel's risqué sexual content and use of obscene language.

After a six-day trial at the Old Bailey, the jury found Lady Chatterley's Lover wasn't obscene, and could therefore be published.

The trial itself was seen as a watershed moment, calling into question Britain's publishing laws and censorship.

Lady Chatterley's Lover was also banned in numerous other countries for obscenity including the United States, Canada, Australia, India and Japan.

In the U.S., the book had been banned since 1929 and that was eventually overturned and it was finally published in 1959, a year before the U.K. followed suit.

Fans have been sharing their excitement about the Netflix adaption online.

One excited fan tweeted: "Didn't realise I'd been waiting all my life for an adaptation of lady chatterleys lover starring cook from skins until they announced an adaptation of lady chatterleys lover starring cook from skins."

Another fan wrote: "HELLOOOOOO ANOTHER REMAKE OF LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER WITH EMMA CORRIN IN IT," while another reposted the official Netflix announcement with the words: "Well this sounds epic."

There is no trailer for Lady Chatterley's Lover yet, but filming is set to begin in Autumn.
