'LAMO Game' Impressions - Battle Royale As Streamers like Ninja & Shroud for a Price

LAMO are a set of collectible figures based off of popular influencers like Tyler "Ninja" Blevins and Guy "DrDisrespect" Beahm." LAMO The Game is based on the property and takes some of these known personalities into the virtual world to fight in their own battle royale.

Releasing today on PC, players can take control of characters based on streamers into a fast-paced shooting arena. Eight players start out on the map in a floating car and collect goo and power-ups to level up and grow. Goo can be earned by standing near generators, getting kills or by destroying the environment. Scattered around the map are unique structures that can be constructed on spaces on the hexagonal play board. Summoning a pair of turrets with an extra bear trap as defense could keep you and your goo generators safe.

Each game lasts around ten minutes, with the map pieces falling as a giant laser creates the board. The gameplay of LAMO The Game might get players interested enough for a free-to-play title, but it's the streamers that will keep them there. The five playable streamers at launch (Ninja, summit1g, TimTheTatman, LIRIK and Shroud) are all under the management firm Loaded, who's largest members have recently been fled popular livestreaming platform Twitch in favor of competitor sites like Mixer and YouTube.

Skins for these streamers need to be bought with LAMO coin that can be purchased for real-world money, a similar model to most free-to-play titles. There's a rotating Daily Shop to purchase skins, a Fan Shop that allows you to unlock a streamer with cosmetics as well as a free and paid Battle Pass that lets you earn content by playing. Unfortunately, you need a skin to play as one of the streamers, adding a paywall to the game's main selling point. You can also purchase the LAMO figurines for a code that unlocks a streamer's specific bundle.

If a fan of one of these influencers wants to play as them in-game, they are going to have to spend to do it. Each streamer also has a unique attack exclusive to the character. TimTheTatman has a "Grizzly Swipe" that does an AoE cleave in front of him. It's a lot easier to aim and deal damage over the precise goo balls that spurt out of the base skin "NoScope Andy." This makes LAMO The Game pay-to-win, at least in its current form.

LAMO The Game is cute, but currently overwhelming microtransactions keep it from being anything more than a gimmick. Getting into a goo fight and losing your car forces you to get strategic on how you want to approach the rest of the game. You can try to unlock enough goo to play as the powerful mech or just fortify the area surrounding you with machines. Also, the same looping synth song for the menu just might give you a headache.

But, LAMO The Game is still in very early access, so all of these flaws can feasibly change before launch.

Ninja and Timothy "TimTheTatman" Betar are currently streaming LAMO The Game, while Saqib "LIRIK" Zahid and Jaryd "Summit1G" Lazar will be streaming at 6:30 p.m. EST. These streamers will be giving out codes for a free classic skin during streams, so now is the best chance to give the game a try.
