When is 'Orange Is the New Black' Coming Back? Laverne Cox Talks Season 6

Season 6 of Orange Is the New Black finished filming February 8, but the Netflix series doesn't have an air date yet. OITNB star Laverne Cox wasn't willing to give away any details, either.

Cox, who plays inmate Sophia Burset, said there was "not a thing" she could divulge about the upcoming season, including the release date. "We don't have one yet. Usually, it airs in the summer," Cox, 45, told Newsweek at Beautycon Festival New York Saturday. "I can say that I had a really great time shooting Season 6. It was really beautiful and special for me."

Playing Sophia on OITNB catapulted Cox's acting career. She earned two Emmy nods for the role. "I've been with this character six seasons now and I love her," Cox said. "I love her journey and everything that she's been through and put through. It's really been an honor. She's one of the greatest joys of my life."

Season 5 took place over the span of three days. Litchfield prisoners banned together to riot the death of Poussey Washington, played by Samira Wiley, in Season 4. Her death was eerily similar to Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died in 2014 after police put him in a chokehold. His dying words, "I can't breathe," were mouthed by Poussey moments before her death.

Season 5 ended on a cliffhanger in its final episode. The institution arranged for the inmates to be split up and placed in different prisons. But not everyone was leaving Litchfield. Piper (Taylor Schilling), Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" (Uzo Aduba) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks)—were hiding out in an abandoned swimming pool turned bunker.

But their cover was blown. In the final moments of the finale, an explosive erupted, ultimately breaking down the bunker's wall. Since none of the inmates died in episode 13, it's likely that fan favorites are expected to reprise their roles.
