Lindsey Graham Called 'an Idiot' by Editor of Right-Wing National Review

The editor of the conservative National Review Online (NRO) called Senator Lindsey Graham "an idiot" in a scathing new op-ed for believing that President Joe Biden would sign the bipartisan infrastructure deal without a reconciliation bill.

"Sen. Lindsey Graham is an idiot. Don't take it from me. Take it from Graham himself," wrote NRO editor Philip Klein in a Friday op-ed.

Last Saturday, Biden walked back a declaration that he would refuse to sign the bipartisan infrastructure deal if it didn't come in tandem with a reconciliation package. After Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other congressional Republicans expressed outrage, Biden reiterated support for the deal and said he wouldn't veto the legislation without a reconciliation bill.

Klein noted that Graham initially accused Biden of making Republicans look like "f***ing idiots," but "yet a week later, Graham is back on board with the bipartisan deal citing a statement Biden made to reassure Republicans."

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated that the Democrat-led House will not vote on the bipartisan infrastructure deal until the Senate pushes through a budget reconciliation. Asked by a reporter about her position after Biden's statement, Pelosi said: "The statement that I made, yes, that is a statement I stand by."

"Our caucus is very, very pleased with the bipartisan agreement that the President was able to achieve working with Democrats and Republicans in the Senate," Pelosi added. "What I said last week and I reiterate now is that in the House of Representatives that particular version as it is is something that we would take up once we see what the budget parameters are of the budget bill that the Senate will pass."

After weeks of negotiations, a group of bipartisan lawmakers struck a deal on infrastructure last Thursday that could pass through both chambers of Congress with support from both sides of the political aisle. The framework includes $579 billion in new spending on transportation, roads, bridges, power, broadband, water and non-transportation infrastructure.

Democrats are seeking to pass a second bill through the Senate, via a budget process called reconciliation, that includes funding for climate change, childcare, health care and other progressive issues.

Klein said Pelosi's latest remarks prove that "both Congressional Democrats and the White House view the two bills as linked. The only ones who don't seem to understand that are Graham and the rest of the Republicans participating in the charade."

"Any Republican who signs on to this pile of hot garbage should be laughed at for getting duped by Biden," he added. "As Graham himself put it, 'You look like a f***ing idiot now."
