Meteorologists continue to monitor a low-pressure system along the Texas coastline they say has a chance of becoming the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which began earlier this month.

In the Atlantic, hurricane season officially runs from June 1 until November 30, during which the majority of tropical storms and hurricanes typically develop in the basin. Should the low-pressure system develop into a tropical storm, it would receive the first name on this year's list: Arthur.

How Likely Is Arthur To Form?

In an early morning update on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the system was moving northeast along the middle Texas coast, moving inland over southwestern Louisiana by Wednesday night.

According to the agency, the system is expected to cause life-threatening flash flooding across parts of the Southeastern United States.

An AccuWeather graphic shows the potential path of a system it dubs a "tropical rainstorm."

"Some strengthening is forecast, and the disturbance could become a tropical storm today," the NHC said.

It added, "Weakening is anticipated once the low moves inland, and it could dissipate by tonight or early Thursday."

The agency gave a 60 percent chance of formation through 48 hours.

It said the potential tropical cyclone is forecast to bring rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches through early Friday, with some isolated areas potentially seeing up to 20 inches. The affected region extends from the upper Texas coast into southern and central Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, as well as parts of western Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. The NHC warns that this could bring "dangerous to life-threatening flash flooding."

As of early Wednesday, flood watches from the National Weather Service stretch from southeastern Texas across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, extending into the western Florida Panhandle and parts of Georgia.

The NHC also said a tropical storm warning is in place from Sabine Pass to Morgan City, while a tropical storm watch is in effect from Sargent to Sabine Pass.

Atlantic Hurricane Season 2026 Storm Names

As the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season may be on the verge of forming, here is the complete list of names for this season's storms, as selected by the World Meteorological Organization:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, forecasting a total of eight to 14 named storms this year.

The 2025 season saw 13 named storms, with five developing into hurricanes—four of which were a Category 4 or 5.

The NHC continues to monitor the disturbance and, as the system develops, is expected to provide frequent updates via its website.
