Locals Defend Woman From Knife Attack With Ladders, Viral Video Shows

A man in Singapore has been arrested after graphic videos circulated apparently showing local restaurant staff trying to protect a woman he was attacking by using ladders and other objects.

Videos shared online showed the man attacking the woman, who is believed to be his wife, in an alleyway with a kitchen knife. He slashed the woman several times while she was lying on the ground, according to a report from The Independent Singapore. The incident occurred on Thursday.

One video shared to Reddit, which can be seen here, (viewer discretion advised) showed other people in the area throwing various objects at the man, including a trashcan and a chair. The video had received more than 11,000 upvotes as of early Friday morning.

At one point, the handle of the kitchen knife reportedly broke but the man continued attacking the woman with the blade, according to The Independent Singapore. Later, he entered a restaurant kitchen to get another knife.

Staff from nearby restaurants began throwing items at the man, apparently in an attempt to separate him from the woman. still according to the outlet. Two people in the footage appeared to threaten the man with ladders.

The man reportedly went back to the kitchen to get another knife and exited through the back door, where a number of people had gathered. He then cut his wrists at the scene, said The Independent Singapore.

Singapore Police Force (SPF) officers tasered the man and arrested him at one of the restaurants. In a statement posted to Facebook, police also acknowledged the role the members of the public had played.

The SPF said they had arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder "of a 41-year-old woman, who is believed to be his wife."

Police said that the incident occurred at 75 Beach Road on April 14 and that when they arrived "officers found the woman with slash wounds at the scene. The woman was conveyed conscious to the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 46-year-old man had allegedly attacked the woman with a chopper."

"Several members of the public had intervened to help the victim and prevent the man from causing further harm to the victim," the SPF statement said.

"Police officers arrived at the scene, located the armed man in the vicinity and deployed Taser to subdue him. Prior to the officers' arrival, the man was believed to have slit his own wrists with a chopper."

"The man was subsequently arrested, and he was conveyed conscious to the hospital. The chopper was seized," they said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Jeremy Ang said in a statement: "The Police would like to commend the members of the public who had intervened to prevent the man from causing further harm to the woman."

The man, who has not been named, will be charged with attempted murder on Saturday, the police said. He could face up to 20 years in prison upon conviction.

Police also said they were "aware of videos circulating online of the incident and would like to urge members of the public to refrain from circulating the videos and speculating on the case."
