Louisiana Mother and Daughter Arrested After Dog Found with Severed Legs, Owners Claim They 'Fell Off'

Multiple arrests have been made in Louisiana after a small dog named "Buddy" was found abandoned in a mobile home park with no legs.

Three arrests have now been made by deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office: a 50-year-old Slidell woman, her 17-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old acquaintance. Each are facing animal cruelty charges in relation to the horrific condition of the dog.

Police were contacted on September 25 after a dog that appeared to have had its two hind legs "sawed off" was taken in by an animal rescue group.

The dog, a breed of dachshund, was suffering from infection and blood loss. Its bones were reportedly sticking out from the wounds. Detectives determined that it had been shot in February but did not receive proper medical attention in the wake of the injury.

Shockingly, the sheriff's office said the mother and daughter told police the dog's legs "fell off" after they were bandaged too tight. As a result of the gunshot, the dog was unable to walk and developed sores on its legs from dragging them behind.

The daughter, who was deemed to have been responsible for the small dog's condition, was arrested on Monday and booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals. Her mother was detained the same day for failing to get the dog proper medical care. She was released on a summons, officials said.

A 17-year-old friend was arrested last Friday, and later released into an adult's custody, after admitting to detectives that she had abandoned the dying dog at the mobile home park. Law enforcement said it was confirmed the dog's leg wounds were "maliciously inflicted."

"As a dog owner myself, I was completely appalled when we received a complaint of such horrific animal cruelty in our community," said sheriff Randy Smith.

"Our investigators acted swiftly, and the parties responsible have been charged accordingly. I would urge anyone with information about this case or any instance of cruelty to defenseless animals, to contact the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office at 985-898-2338."

The police investigation continues.

The injured dog not only survived the harrowing incident but is now in recovery, according to Dante's Hope East, a rescue group that is helping to raise money for the treatment. On Facebook, more than $12,000 has been donated from about 550 people in a week.

Gina Polk, who is caring for the dog, shared an update about Buddy's current health status on September 27, saying the dog is in "good spirits" and was finally eating food again.

"His pain is being managed and the tissue on what is left of his legs now look healthy. He is having daily wound care and bandage changes which he is not too fond of but he is being a champ about it," Polk wrote, sharing a link to the popular fundraiser.

"He will undergo surgery in the next week or so to repair what was done and once he has put on some weight he will be fitted for his own set of wheels so he can get back to running around again. Buddy is not paralyzed and has full use of both his nubs and his tail."

"There is no way his legs came off on their own and had to be in fact sawed off which is what his wounds and X-rays also support," Polk continued in the Facebook update. "This was an intentional act which no animal should have to endure regardless of the circumstances and we are waiting on the sheriff's office to bring charges against the person or persons involved."
