Lowe's Kobalt Chainsaw Recall Due to 'Laceration Hazard,' Might Not Turn Off

Two electric saws from the Kobalt brand sold exclusively at Lowe's, including a 12-inch chainsaw, have been recalled due to a "laceration hazard" posed by a faulty switch that may prevent the devices from being turned off, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has confirmed.

The products recalled are Kobalt's 40-volt lithium-ion 12-inch cordless electric chainsaws and Kobalt's 40-volt lithium-ion 8-inch cordless electric pole saws.

The CPSC confirmed about 150,000 units of the 12-inch chainsaws are on recall in the country, in addition to around 1,400 in Canada. Around 106,400 units of the 8-inch pole saws are on recall in the U.S., as well as about 120 in Canada.

No injuries have been reported for either device and consumers have been advised to immediately stop usage of the products and to contact the distributor, Hongkong Sun Rise Trading, for a free repair.

The Kobalt 40-volt lithium-ion 12-inch cordless electric chainsaws being recalled were manufactured from November 2013 to March 2020 and sold by Lowe's from January 2014 through March 2020 for around $200, the CPSC confirmed.

The distributor "received 48 reports of the switch contacts welding causing the chainsaw to remain in the 'on' position," the commission noted on its website.

The Kobalt 40-volt lithium-ion 8-inch cordless electric pole saws on recall were manufactured from January 2017 through February 2019 and sold by Lowe's from March 2017 through October 2019 for about $180, the commission noted.

The product was recalled after the distributor "received 65 reports of the saws continuing to run," according to the commission.

Below are the unique product codes, item and model numbers for the saws that have been recalled. See the CPSC website for more information.

Back in 2018, over a million chainsaws sold at Harbor Freight Tools stores across the country were recalled because they may not turn off.

The company received 15 reports of malfunctioning off switches on their 14-inch chainsaws, which resulted in three laceration injuries, including one that required multiple stitches to the consumer's arm.

"Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually," the CPSC confirmed.
