Murder suspect Luigi Mangione appeared in court on Friday afternoon for his first hearing since being charged in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The hearing, which was held at 2:15 p.m. ET, marked the early stages of legal proceedings involving Mangione.

Judge Gregory Carro did not set a trial date for Mangione, 26, during the hearing. But his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, pushed for him to be moved out of the Metro Detention Center in Brooklyn since he's being held on a complaint in federal court, but on an indictment from Manhattan prosecutors.

Prior to the hearing, Newsweek reached out to Mangione's lawyer for comment.

Why It Matters

Mangione's Friday court hearing was a key step in the legal process as he faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification. The 26-year-old has pleaded not guilty to state murder and terror charges.

Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024, five days after Thompson was killed near the New York Hilton in Manhattan.

Prosecutors have also filed federal charges against Mangione, which could result in the death penalty.

It was unclear if Mangione's family members attended the hearing at the time of publishing. However, multiple women gathered outside of Friday's hearing to show their support for Mangione.
