'Luigi's Mansion 3' E3 2019 Hands-On: I Ain't Afraid of No Ghosts, Boo

Nintendo has brought a collection of it's most anticipated games to E3 2019 and one of them completely caught me off-guard: Luigi's Mansion 3. I never played the original game on the GameCube and don't really know much about the franchise. The premise seems ridiculous: take control of the green Mario Brother, and collect ghosts in a tiny vacuum. I quickly fell in love with the spooky world of Luigi, his ghost dog and Gooigi.

Luigi's Mansion 3 takes place in a hotel, a first for the franchise. This allows for a wide array of new challenges and settings that couldn't be done in a traditional haunted mansion. The demo at E3 takes place in a medieval themed area, with ghosts equipped with swords and shields to protect themselves. The atmosphere might pull you in, but the gameplay really keeps you hooked.

You control Luigi with the left analog stick and aim your vacuum at the spectral pests with the right. A ghost won't just jump into your hoover, first need to stun them with your flashlight first. Once startled, start sucking them up with the right bumper and turning the analog stick in the opposite direction. While these ghosts scream for their undead lives, you can slam them on the ground with the A button, damaging adjacent enemies. It's a very unique game that can be tricky to control at first, but once you get that down, you'll be hooked. I had to start the demo over twice before beating the final boss, which isn't that abnormal with new games I play.

There are also puzzles to keep you busy when there aren't ghosts to catch. Luigi's vacuum can also shoot a plunger that can be grabbed by the vacuum and summon the adorable Gooigi. This green, translucent version of Luigi can walk through spikes and get places normal flesh and bone can't. Switching requires single tapping the right analog stick, but sometimes I found myself accidentally switching between the two by accident.

If Link's Awakening doesn't have you hyped to play your Nintendo Switch, Luigi's Mansion 3 should.
