Luka Doncic's Dominating Olympics Performance For Slovenia Sparks Jokes, Memes

Dallas Mavericks and Slovenia star Luka Doncic had a memorable performance in his first ever Olympics basketball match, prompting memes and jokes from social media users praising him after his country won their opening fixture.

Slovenia defeated Argentina 118-110 in their opening game of the 2020 Olympics, scoring the most of any team to have played in the tournament so far as Doncic, 22, was the standout player for his nation.

In the first quarter, Doncic scored 17 of Slovenia's 32 points, giving his country an eight-point lead going into the first break, which meant the Dallas Mavericks point guard was ninth in the scoring list for the tournament having only played 10 minutes.

Doncic added to his total in the second quarter taking his tally for the game to 31 by the end of the first half, before helping propel his team to a narrow victory over Argentina scoring an individual 48 points for Slovenia.

The 22-year-old became the first player to score 40 points individually in an Olympics match in his lifetime, as the last score over 40 came in 1996 when Brazilian player Oscar Schmidt recorded 45.

Doncic is now second in the table for highest individual score at the Olympics in men's basketball behind Schmidt's record of 55 from 1988.

Doncic's match-winning performance prompted praise from pundits and fans alike on social media, as several jokes and memes were spread on Twitter about his 48-point scoring Olympics debut.

Team USA lost their opening fixture of the 2020 Olympics to France 83-76, marking the first time that the country had lost a match at the tournament since 2004.

The loss came after shock defeats to Nigeria and Australia in warm-up fixtures putting their favorite status into doubt.

The next fixture for Slovenia, the 16th ranked team in the world, is against Japan on Thursday before they then face Spain, the 2nd ranked team in the world, in their final group game on Sunday.
