'It's Coming Home' Memes and Lyrics: England Goes World Cup Crazy With Help of Classic 'Three Lions' Song

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming, football's coming home. [Repeat.] [Repeat.] [Repeat.]

It's the song the entire world can't seem to get out of its head. (Thanks, England).

Get ready for some more of it on Wednesday, especially if England comes out on top in its match against Croatia in the World Cup semifinals in Russia. English fans sing the tune to celebrate their national soccer team. Officially titled "Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)," the song has turned the phrase "it's coming home" into a rallying cry of sorts for English fans. Here are the lyrics to the 1996 song by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner & The Lightning Seeds via Genius.

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

[Verse 1]

Everyone seems to know the score, they've seen it all before

They just know, they're so sure

That England's gonna throw it away, gonna blow it away

But I know they can play, 'cause I remember

[Chorus]

Three lions on a shirt

Jules Rimet still gleaming

Thirty years of hurt

Never stopped me dreaming

[Verse 2]

So many jokes, so many sneers

But all those "Oh, so nears", wear you down through the years

But I still see that tackle by Moore and when Lineker scored

Bobby belting the ball, and Nobby dancing

[Chorus]

Three lions on a shirt

Jules Rimet still gleaming

Thirty years of hurt

Never stopped me dreaming

[Bridge]

What a save, Gordon Banks!

Good old England, England that couldn't play football!

England have got it in the bag!I know that was then, but it could be again

[Refrain]

It's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

(England have done it)

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

[Chorus]

(It's coming home) Three lions on a shirt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming

(Football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming

(Football's coming homeIt's coming home) Three lions on a shirt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming

(Football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming

(Football's coming home, it's coming home) Three lions on a shirt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming

(Football's coming home, it's coming home) Thirty years of hurt

(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming

(Football's coming home)

As Newsweek's Dan Cancian detailed, the song has dual meaning—it was written in honor of England hosting Euro '96 (football was coming back home to the place it was invented) and has since taken on the meaning of the hopes that England will once again win a World Cup (the trophy returning to the homeland of soccer). The song has a had a long shelf life, perhaps because it is catchy as all hell. Songwriter Ian Broudie has said he accidentally wrote two choruses, which is kind of what made the song such a hit.

“I think that’s where the magic of the song actually was,” producer Rick Blaskey told The Guardian in an interview. “Frank and David’s delivery and lyrics were phenomenal, but for Ian to come up with a song with two choruses …”

Surely nobody could have seen the massive popularity that was to come, even with two choruses. Now that it's 2018, as with anything else, the "it's coming home" rallying cry has been churned through the gears of the internet machine—and out came memes and tweets. Here's a collection of a few of our favorites.
