President Donald Trump has proposed a new nickname for MAGA. In a post on Truth Social, he suggested “TEPUBLICAN,” or “TPUBLICAN.”

Why It Matters

The president’s proposal comes at a moment of major turmoil for the MAGA contingent, which has become split on numerous issues, including the fallout over the Epstein files, criticism over foreign policy issues, the state of the economy, the offer of 600,000 visas to Chinese students, and Trump’s praise for the H-1B visa program.

Beyond the conflict over specific issues, the resignation of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, and the revelation that many high-profile MAGA accounts on social media are based outside the U.S. have acted as more dominoes falling and people are starting to question if the MAGA movement might be approaching its end.

What To Know

Trump said that there is a new word for a “TRUMP REPUBLICAN,” which he described as being “almost everyone,” before floating the two names.

The term MAGA is an acronym for the Make America Great Again slogan, which has evolved to become a catch-all term for Trump's supporters. But the MAGA base has fractured and the president’s approval rating has plunged to a new low.

Trump has long assigned nicknames, from “Crooked Hillary” Clinton, a reference to the former secretary of state, and “Sleepy Joe” Biden, a term used to deride former President Joe Biden. The terms aren’t limited to Democrats, though, having previously dubbed Texas Senator Ted Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” during the 2016 campaign and calling Florida Governor Ron DeSantis “DeSanctimonious” in 2023.

And the suggestion has quickly made an impression on social media, with people quickly sharing posts including the word “Tepublican.” The posts, however, vary in tone from praising the suggestion to sharply criticizing and poking fun at it.

What People Are Saying

@SaveUSAKitty, a screenwriter with more than 70,000 followers, on X: “Give me a [thumbs up emoji] if you’re also a “TEPUBLICAN”!”

Aaron Rupar, a journalist, in a post on X viewed more than 75,000 times sharing Trump’s announcement: “wut.”

Alex Cole, a progressive commentator, on X: “Tepublican sounds about right for a party that hasn’t had a real policy idea since Obama was in office.”
