'Slipping Through My Fingers' TikTok Trend Encourages More Wholesome Videos

40 years after ABBA released the original version in 1981, "Slipping Through My Fingers" has surged in popularity again after TikTokers made it a wholesome online trend.

Mamma Mia's version of the song is bringing a more emotional side to TikTok, with users recounting nostalgic memories to the track.

The audio has over 30,000 videos on the app at the time of publication, while the tag #SlippingThroughMyFingers has over 58 million views.

Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried's cover of the song was featured in the soundtrack of the 2008 romantic musical Mamma Mia, as the scene captures their respective characters preparing for Sophie's wedding.

The trend sees users pair a snippet of the song with an emotional memory of a family member that pulls on heart-strings.

User @bardtard's video, which was uploaded on May 1, went viral on the app with over 3.3 million likes so far. "Thinking about the time my dad felt bad because he threw out my cookie cutters, so he went to the garage and made one for me," reads the on-screen text.

The clip is followed by an image of a misshapen homemade cookie cutter, and sparked relatable emotions in the comments. "I would keep that for a lifetime and make them for my children," wrote one viewer.

Similarly, @kaylablock_'s video about her memory of her grandmother hit 2.6 million likes. "Thinking about how I told my grandma I had nothing to wear to my friend's party and she was so excited to rush home and send me the 'perfect outfit' she could lend me," reads text which precedes messages showing the outfit.

The "Slipping Through My Fingers" audio trend extends out to more than just typical family members too, as one viral video includes a four-legged friend. "Thinking about how before I adopted my dog, her shelter used to dress up in cute outfits to try to get people interested in her because no one ever asked to see her," shared user @legendofmellowandzelda.

I’m so lucky to have found her, adopting her is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made ❤️ #adoption #crying #fyp #slippingthroughmyfingers

Encouraging heartwarming stories, the audio makes a difference from some of the other trends hosted on the app in recent times.

March's "Blackout Challenge" showed just how dangerous TikTok trends can get when it was linked to the death of a user. 2020 also saw the rise of the "Coronavirus Challenge" which encouraged people to lick toilets, and the "Benadryl Challenge" which had users attempting to trip out on allergy medication.

It's a sentiment shared by users of the app too, with many taking to Twitter to express adoration for the trend: "My heart can't take another 'Slipping Through My Fingers' Tiktok," shared one user.

"Once a week i stalk the slipping through my fingers sound on TikTok just to feel something," added another.
