Man Accidentally Shoots Himself in Walmart Trying On Pants

A man accidentally shot and wounded himself while trying on a pair of pants in a dressing room at Walmart on Friday. He was rushed to a local hospital and no other injuries were reported.

The man, who has not been named, visited a Walmart in McMinnville, Oregon. While trying on pants in the dressing room, his pistol fell out of his pocket, according to WKRN.

The firearm hit the floor and discharged, hitting the man in the back of the leg before the bullet lodged itself in his ankle. The McMinnville Police Department is investigating the incident.

The man was taken to Ascension Saint Thomas River Park Hospital in McMinnville but no update on his condition has been provided.

Accidental shootings are not uncommon in the U.S. and many result in death, according to the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (EFSGV).

A 2017 study published in Health Affairs found that 36.7 percent of all non-fatal gun injuries are unintentional, while 50.2 percent are assaults.

In a separate analysis in the medical journal Injury Epidemiology published in 2019, it was estimated that 430 unintentional firearms fatalities occur in the U.S. every year.

Moreover, a study by the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health published last year reported that 329 people were injured in the U.S. with firearms every day. However, researchers found that just 1 percent of unintentional injuries resulted in death.

"Research has shown that suicide is the most common form of firearm deaths, and suicide prevention is of preeminent importance. But looking at these numbers of nonfatal injuries can raise concern in other areas needing their own forms of prevention," said lead researcher Elinore J. Kaufman.

"After two decades of progress, rates of firearm injuries are now increasing, and effective prevention strategies are urgently needed," she said.

There have been some recent examples of accidental firearms injuries. Police in El Paso said on Tuesday they suspected a man found with a gunshot wound in a hotel had accidentally shot himself, according to The El Paso Times.

On Sunday, a nine-year-old child accidentally shot and killed an 11-year-old in Dallas, Texas with a gun he found in a car. Last week, a five-year-old died in an accidental shooting in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in a similar incident where children were playing with a gun.
