A man in New York was arrested in relation to the murder of his girlfriend, 35-year-old Mindy Singer, who was stabbed to death with a 46-inch sword.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday at the suspect's home in Queens, New York. NYPD received a report of a robbery in progress inside the home.
After the suspect, 37-year-old Peter Ikonomou called 911, police arrived at the fourth-floor apartment and found Singer inside and suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was declared dead by EMS at the scene.
Police also found a 46-inch sword still sticking out of Singer's buttock, New York Daily News reported. After interviewing Ikonomou, they deemed his story about the robbery was false and took him into custody. Ikonomou was allegedly high on drugs during the altercation, per the Daily News.
According to police, Singer and Ikonomou were in a relationship and lived approximately two miles away from each other.
Ikonomou now faces charges in connection to the death of his girlfriend including murder, assault, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
While the alleged motive is still unclear, police said they believed the two were arguing.
Newsweek has contacted the New York Police Department for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
In New Jersey, a woman was accused of stabbing her 5-month-old daughter to death on Friday. On Saturday, the Salem County Prosecutor's Office announced 26-year-old Kristhie I. Alcazar was arrested and charged with murder in relation to the death of her daughter.
"Late Friday night, December 3, police responded to an open 911 call with audible disturbance in the background," an official statement read. "Investigators arrived at Alcazar's residence...where they found Alcazar arguing with another person and the body of the deceased infant with visible stab wounds to the chest."
Additional evidence, including multiple knives, was collected at the scene. The infant's cause of death was determined to be "homicide as a result of stab wounds to the chest area."
