New Jersey Man Arrested After Getting Stuck in Traffic In Stolen Car With Child And Grandmother Still Inside

A man was arrested after he ended up stuck in traffic in an SUV he allegedly stole in New York City with a child and elderly grandmother still inside.

Shane Cooper, 31, was taken into custody after officers found a Toyota Rav 4 in traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway on Wednesday night, PIX11 reported.

Officers from the New York Police Department responded to a 911 call from a supermarket on East 235th Street in The Bronx, New York City, at around 7.10 p.m., a police spokesperson told Newsweek.

A 49-year-old woman told officers she had left the vehicle running with her 11-year-old son and 81-year-old mother inside. She left to go quickly pick up a few items in the C-Town supermarket just after 7 p.m., according to NBC New York. But when she returned to the spot she had parked, she realized her vehicle was gone.

She then went back inside the supermarket to ask the manager if the car had been towed while she was shopping. "She was telling me, did you guys tow my car? I go, 'we're never gonna do that,'" manager Mo Kaid told WABC.

According to the station, surveillance footage showed the suspect jumping into the vehicle and drive off without turning on the lights.

Police ended up managing to locate the vehicle after discovering the woman's iPhone was still in her car and tracked the vehicle's movements using a computer in the store.

"We were refreshing every 20 seconds and he was moving left to right, he was going southbound on 95, trying to go northbound, and ten minutes, eight minutes later they got him by the George Washington Bridge, about the enter the bridge," Kaid told WABC.

NYPD officers were able to reach the SUV at around 8.30 p.m., a little over an hour after the woman had reported it stolen, on the Cross Bronx Expressway by Jerome Avenue, NBC New York reported. The woman's mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, and her son were unharmed during the incident, the station reported.

Cooper, of Teaneck, New Jersey, is facing a number of charges, including grand larceny auto, kidnapping, reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, police said.

Newsweek has contacted the C-Town supermarket for further comment.
