Man in Critical Condition After Ambulance Taking Him to Hospital Hit by Bus

A 30-year-old man from Milwaukee who was being transported to hospital by ambulance has sustained life-threatening injuries after the vehicle was struck by a bus.

The crash occurred on the Wisconsin city's north side at around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Fire Department said.

The ambulance was parked with its emergency lights on when the Milwaukee County Transit System bus struck it from behind, causing it to flip onto its side, according to a statement from operator Bell Ambulance.

Fox 6 News Milwaukee reported that the windshield of the bus was shattered in the collision, while the ambulance lay damaged next to a power pole.

Four people had to be hospitalized as a result of the crash. The 30-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries and is in a critical condition in hospital. His medical condition before the crash is not known.

Two other occupants of the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The bus driver, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Bell Ambulance said in a statement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with our two employees and all other injured parties."

The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating the incident.

In a statement, Milwaukee County Transit System said: "MCTS is cooperating with MPD as it investigates a serious accident involving an MCTS bus and an ambulance. Everyone at MCTS is following the situation closely as details emerge. Our hearts go out to all involved."

Local energy provider We Energies responded to the area after the crash in order to fix the broken power line, CBS 58 reported. The company said a handful of customers would be without electricity while the pole was being replaced.

This incident is not the only bus crash to make headlines in recent weeks. In late November, three people were killed when a pickup truck collided with a school bus in Big Spring, Texas.

The bus was carrying members of a high school band who were heading to a football game, according to law enforcement officials. The truck driver and two adults on the bus died.

On December 4, at least 33 people died when a bus taking guests to a wedding fell into a river in southeastern Kenya.

Around 60 people were on the bus, including several children. The incident occurred when the driver made an unsuccessful attempt to cross a submerged bridge. The driver had waited two hours before attempting the crossing.

Also in November, a school bus carrying 29 students veered off road and hurled down an embankment into a creek in Pennsylvania. Fourteen people were treated in hospital, NBC Philadelphia reported.
