Internet Disgusted as Man Demands Open Relationship Until Wife Loses Weight

The internet has slammed a man who asked his wife for an open relationship until she lost weight.

In a viral Reddit post shared on Sunday, user somegiriontheinter shared the story on the popular subreddit r/TrueOffMyChest. The post now has over 29,000 upvotes and over 11,000 comments.

Somegiriontheinter wrote: "During COVID-19 and quarantine, I've put on some weight and because of that my husband has been very vocal about him finding me too big and not attractive, but today he told me he wants an open relationship until I've lost weight and weigh the same as I used to so that he finds me attractive."

A survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 42 percent of U.S. adults reported undesired weight gain since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an average reported gain of 29 pounds and as many as 10 percent of respondents reporting weight gain of over 50 pounds. Other research in 2021 found that the pandemic led to an increase in weight gain in children and teenagers in the U.S. too, with 22 percent now considered obese.

Explaining further, the poster on Reddit said: "I've told him I will start going to the gym but that didn't make him change his mind. I have saved some money for a gym membership and clothes so I'm preparing to start but it kind of hurt me when he said he wanted to sleep with other women until I lost some weight. Is this normal?

"I get that he doesn't like that I've gained weight, but I'm trying to work on it but I just feel like it would be nice with some support from him instead of him being with other women until I'm more fit."

According to a Forbes Health survey from January 2022, 26 percent of respondents said they felt more negatively about their body image than before the COVID-19 pandemic, while only 15 percent said they felt more positively about their body today than before the pandemic began.

Redditors responded to the story with shock—overwhelmingly siding with the woman.

"This is not normal at all," said one user: "If he really loved you he would support you in your weight loss journey and he wouldn't put you aside like that."

Another response said: "It sounds like he may already have someone in mind that he is interested in. This may just be an excuse for him to pursue that person and feel justified in some weird cruel way."

One commenter on the post wrote: "I'm sorry that he has said those things to you. A spouse should love you no matter what. That's the whole reason you get married in the first place."

A study by the APA found that while women are constantly exposed to weight-stigmatizing messages and pressure to lose weight, they are more likely to lose weight and eat healthily when their romantic partners support their autonomy.

Another commenter on somegiriontheinter's story said: "My wife put on a lot of weight due to numerous health issues we've gone through the past several years and I can say without a second of hesitation that I'm more in love with her and more sexually attracted to her than ever. Your husband is unworthy of you."

As well as weight-gain, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted other parts of our health. The APA said that adults reported unwanted changes in sleep, with 67 percent saying they had been sleeping more or less. Meanwhile, nearly one in four adults reported drinking more alcohol to cope with their stress.

Last week, another man sparked outrage online after telling his wife she must lose 28lbs to save their marriage.
