Man Found Dead in Abandoned Business Had Been Shot Dead and Frozen: Police

A man from Florida who recently moved to Michigan was found shot dead, wrapped in duct tape and frozen inside an abandoned business, according to police.

The man's remains were found in some trash by a realtor who was checking out a neglected business in Detroit's West Side on Thursday, January 20, according to Fox 2.

Detroit Police Department (DPD) Lt. Robert Lalone told the network: "We had a scout car respond, then ultimately homicide responded and unfortunately it was human remains.

"So, he's wrapped up in a blanket and dropped off in the inside of the interior of a vacant business."

He added the man wrapped in a blanket was Steven Shelby, 41, who had recently moved to Detroit and that his last address was in Florida.

Lalone further stated it took several days for the autopsy to be carried out due to the condition his body was in, according to Fox 2.

He continued to tell the network: "Conveyed him to Wayne County Medical Examiner, it took several days to complete the autopsy because his remains were frozen."

The medical examiner later determined Shelby had been shot several times before his body was left inside the abandoned building.

Shelby was identified through examination of his fingerprints and his family in Florida was informed about his death on Tuesday.

Lalone told Fox 2: "They [Shelby's family] said he was moving to Detroit [for] a new start on life. [He was] just venturing into different things and that's what brought him to Detroit.

"Everyone needs closure in a case like this it's not going to bring him back, but it helps with the grieving process—it helps them move things along."

Newsweek has contacted the DPD for comment.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., 15 people in Detroit have been fatally shot since January 1.

Across Michigan, 29 people have died as a result of being shot since start of the year, the same database found.

In Florida, a fisherman made a shocking discovery after he reeled in a dead body from a lake.

Auburndale police said two men were fishing at Lake Stella when one of them hooked something heavy at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

When officers arrived, they determined the dead body was that of a 40-year-old man who lived in the area and had recently returned, Auburn police told Newsweek.

Officers said the body had most likely been in the lake for one or two days before it was found.
