Man Kills Mom's Ex By Tying Him to Truck, Setting it on Fire—Police

A man in Texas has been charged with murder, after detectives said he tied his mother's ex-boyfriend to his own truck and dragged him down the road, before setting the vehicle on fire and walking away.

37-year-old Robert Eugene Hoffpauir was arrested in connection with the murder of Roman Rodriguez, 60, his mother, Timey Ann Cole's ex-boyfriend, the Liberty County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) said.

"Right now, it seems like it was a domestic situation that went totally out of control and the son stepped in, took action he shouldn't have taken—far beyond what was called for," LCSO spokesman Ken Defoor told KHOU 11.

Investigators allege Rodriguez went to Hoffpauir's home near Rye, Texas, on Saturday night and the two men got into a fight over the relationship between Rodriguez and Hoffpauir's mother. Detectives claim Rodriguez was severely beaten by Hoffpauir, who then tied a tow strap around the Rodriguez's waist and attached it to his pick-up truck.

Investigators said Hoffpauir drove and dragged Rodriguez for a while, before he set the truck on fire and left the scene. The truck was reported to have been abandoned on CR 2741, just north of Rye.

It is unclear whether Rodriguez died before he was dragged by the truck or sometime later, but an autopsy is underway to determine this, police said.

Rodriguez's body was discovered when a 911 emergency call was made by a neighbor to report a fire, according to Bluebonnet News. When emergency services arrived, they found a burned out truck with Rodriguez's body lying behind it. A trail of blood was found leading from the home to where his body was found.

"It's got everybody distraught around here," neighbor Chuck Barnes told Click2Houston. "It's got everybody distraught and very upset."

Hoffpauir was arrested on Sunday and given a $1 million bond. Additional charges could be filed.

The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation.

A similar incident happened in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on March 19, when a family dispute turned deadly—18-year-old Joseph Chambers shot and killed his mother's 48-year-old live-in boyfriend Jumal Wells.

Police said witnesses mentioned that there had been an ongoing dispute, which led to Chambers shooting Wells. Chambers was booked into EBR Parish Prison for second degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
