Transfer News: Manchester United Pounce on Barcelona Star Umtiti, Chelsea Get Major Boost

The £300 million ($425 million) Jose Mourinho has spent since joining Manchester United has largely been used to strengthen the team going forward.

Gone were the days when United would terrify teams. "Attack, attack, attack," the United fans would chant during Louis van Gaal's reign. And so Mourinho knew the focus was on going forward when he arrived.

They bought some of the very best in Europe, like Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. This has led to some improvements with United entertaining frequently.

But Mourinho is set to return to his old ways this summer as he looks to buy a defender who, he hopes, will help solidify the United defense and make them title contenders again.

Elsewhere in the transfer round-up, Chelsea is boosted by the words of one of their defenders, but champions-elect Manchester City are in danger of losing one of their stars.

Manchester United look to be closing in on French center-back Samuel Umtiti, according to the Daily Mirror. The 24-year-old defender refused to answer a question about a move to Old Trafford in the summer, fueling talk of a switch away from Barcelona.

In West London, Chelsea will have felt a relief after hearing Marcos Alonso is not looking for a move away from Stamford Bridge. According to Marca, the 27-year-old left-back, who made his debut for Spain on Tuesday, has not considered leaving the Premier League champions.

There's no such good news for Manchester City, though, as Pep Guardiola's team risks losing one of its stars of this season. According to the Daily Mail, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus has turned down a £90,000-a-week offer from the league leaders and will wait until after the World Cup to decide his future.

But City still have plans of their own to strengthen. According to The Sun, Guardiola's team are planning on breaking their club transfer record this summer to sign 25-year-old Spanish midfielder Isco from Real Madrid.

And finally, Newcastle United are looking to grab a bargain this mercato. They have been scouting Besiktas' 24-year-old midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup, according to, as they aim to get him for free this summer.
