A statewide manhunt concluded Saturday with the capture of Thomas David Ryan, according to an update from the New York State Police (NYSP).

The 32-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with the death of his 70-year-old father after police say he deliberately set a house fire in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York.

Authorities have not said where he was captured or how he was taken into custody but noted that the "active search in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County has concluded."

According to state police, troopers responding to a reported house fire on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville at about 7:30 p.m. on August 6 discovered the body of 70-year-old Robert Ryan inside after firefighters extinguished the blaze. Investigators subsequently determined the fire was intentionally set to cover up the crime and launched a homicide investigation.

Greenville is a rural community located about 65 miles northwest of New York City. Following the incident, law enforcement patrols were increased across Greenville and surrounding areas in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties.

Investigators had asked residents and business owners in the area to review surveillance footage recorded from 6 p.m. on August 6 through the overnight hours.

"The community’s assistance is critical," state police said in a statement before Ryan was found. "Even the smallest detail could provide investigators with information needed to safely locate Thomas and bring this investigation to a safe conclusion."

Who Is Thomas David Ryan?

Investigators said Ryan did not live with his father and had no known current ties to Greenville, having lived a transient lifestyle across state shelters with known ties to the Plattsburgh area near the Canadian border. According to ABC7, he has seven prior arrests in New York City and is on probation until April 2028.

Stephanie Coiro, Ryan’s sister, told ABC News that her brother has struggled with severe mental illness for years and that their father had recently picked him up after receiving a call for assistance, bringing him to the Greenville home hours before the fatal incident.

"He had his first break at 16, hospitalization programs are only covered so long, medications can only be encouraged until 18, and then you can make your own decisions, and if you know anything about schizophrenia, schizophrenia will tell you you're fine," Coiro said about her brother.
