Mardi Gras 2020 Travel Deals: Last Minute New Orleans Hotel and Flight Package Offers

Mardi Gras 2020 falls on February 25 and it's not too late to book a last minute package for New Orleans to join the celebrations next week.

Festivities in New Orleans include various foot parades throughout the city, including in the French Quarter, with various people dressed in colorful costumes.

Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, takes place on the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the last day of feasting before the beginning of Lent.

The history of Mardi Gras can be traced back to the French House of the Bourbons in medieval Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived in a region just south of New Orleans in March 1699 and called it "Pointe du Mardi Gras."

In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated the country's first-ever Mardi Gras. By the 1830s, the elaborate procession we see today, with people wearing masks and on carriages and horseback, began its tradition.
