The Seattle Mariners swung a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez at the trade deadline, but Suárez's contract expired at the end of the season.
Now the Mariners need to pay up if they want to bring him back to Seattle. Jim Bowden of The Athletic projected that Suárez would sign for $72 million this winter, which should work for the Mariners' payroll.
CBS Sports' RJ Anderson predicted the Mariners would re-sign Suárez to a new deal this offseason.

"Suárez homered 49 times last season, but you wouldn't know it based on how quiet his market has been to date. Blame it on his advanced age (he'll turn 35 in July), extreme swing-and-miss tendencies, and lacking third-base defense," Anderson wrote. "The path of least resistance points to a reunion with the Mariners. Perhaps the Red Sox (if they miss out on Bregman) or the Cubs (if they whiff on a higher-priced pitching pursuit) could factor into the equation too."
Suárez had a huge season this year, slugging 49 home runs and registering a 3.6 WAR. He hit 13 home runs in just over 50 games with the Mariners.
It's hard to expect the veteran to continue at this level, but he should be able to comfortably hit at least 30 home runs a season for the next three or four years. The Mariners would be foolish to let him leave in free agency, especially if it would only cost them around $20 million a year to sign him.
