Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s post about his call with U.S. President Donald Trump has garnered a reaction from people online.
"I spoke with President Trump this afternoon on a range of issues, including the economy, developments in the Middle East, and trade relations between our two countries — and we agreed to stay in close contact," Carney posted on X on Monday.
Some reactions online included people saying the message means the call "went badly" while others praised Carney as "the new leader of the free and sane world." Some asked what "is even the point of this post" and mocked the update as "groundbreaking."

Why It Matters
Carney’s post comes at a time of heightened strain in U.S.-Canada relations, with disputes over trade, foreign policy and economic ties increasingly spilling into public view.
The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and previously threatened further measures—including potential 100 percent tariffs—while Ottawa has explored expanding trade partnerships with other countries, drawing criticism from Washington.
What People Are Saying
Toronto-based X user James Rosen-Birch, a business founder who often posts about politics to his 11,000 followers, shared Carney’s post and said: "Surprising how many people don’t understand this readout means the call went *really* badly."
A MAGA account called Pino Americano (@PinoAmericano) said: "Translation: Trump told the Canadian Governor to f***k off."
Canadian media personality Dean Blundell said: "Carney has been asked to speak to Trump on behalf of the free world. He’s being understated here. My understanding is that as the new leader of the free and sane world, Carney was asked to deliver a message and it fell on deaf ears."
Canadian guns rights activist Tracey Wilson said: "Trade negotiations have been reduced to ‘keep in touch.’"
Alberta-based steel business owner Kevin Pacitti said: "WTF was even the point of this post."
An account called Frank Grimes Jr., who often posts about American and Canadian politics to his 25,000 followers, said: "Wow that's groundbreaking. Well done. What an announcement. You really are a master negotiator. You've been in power nearly a year, life has continued to get harder, and while we await a free market deal with the United States (and between provinces), with no quotas, we get this."
What Happens Next
It remains unclear whether Carney and Trump will hold further talks in the coming days, but both leaders are likely to remain in close contact as tensions between Washington and Ottawa continue to play out over trade and foreign policy.
With conflict continuing in the Middle East and both countries closely involved in diplomatic and security efforts in the region, coordination between Washington and Ottawa could become increasingly important.
