Mary Trump has said she is "heartbroken" watching the impeachment trial of her uncle Donald Trump. The niece of the former president has always been a sharp critic of his actions, and now has expressed her dismay at how the impeachment proceedings are playing out.
The former president stands accused of inciting insurrection over the January 6 Capitol riots which saw the deaths of five people, including a police officer. The trial is not expected to continue past Sunday, making it the shortest ever impeachment trial in history.
"I know I should be enraged, disgusted, horrified, and outraged," she tweeted on Tuesday. "On some level I am all of those things, but mostly right now I'm heartbroken."

Mary Trump's tweet came as a divided U.S. Senate saw just six Republican members vote to proceed with the trial.
The Republican senators who voted in favor of Donald Trump's second Senate impeachment trial were Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, and Ben Sasse of Nebraska.
In a later tweet, Mary Trump added: "Pretty sure this is the textbook definition of craven. Also, why can't republicans drink water like normal human beings?"
Donald Trump is the first president to face an impeachment trial after leaving office, and the only president in American history to be impeached twice.
A clinical psychologist, Mary Trump has been a fervent critic of the GOP and has previously said she is prepared to change her name to distance herself from her uncle, who she has even called a "sociopath."
The 55-year-old published her tell-all memoir Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man about her uncle earlier this year.
During an appearance on SiriusXM's The Dean Obeidallah Show yesterday, Mary Trump spoke about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy who she said is using the former president as part of a political strategy.
Host Obeidallah asked about McCarthy's recent visit to Mar-a-Lago to "kiss the ring of Donald Trump."
"Do you think they're just really using Trump as a fundraising tool?" he asked.
"Yeah, I hear people say, all the time, that they're afraid of him," Mary Trump said. "No they're not, you know, they're totally in line with him. They are him. They're all on the same page here.
"They're just thrilled that someone like Donald came along who was willing to push the envelope and break norms and get them whatever they wanted all along, which they were too, I don't know, unimaginative to go after. So I think people always use Donald. That's all he's good for. So yeah, absolutely."
