Video: White Maryland Police Officer Uses N-word While Trying to Disperse Gathering Outside McDonald's

Maryland police are investigating a video that was posted to social media this week showing a white officer using a racial slur while addressing a group of black men.

The incident took place yesterday outside a McDonald's on New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring shortly after 10:30 a.m. One of the men who recorded footage, Barry Tucker, told WRC-TV they had been waiting to be picked up for work when they were accused of trespassing.

Tucker told Fox 5 he was waiting with two of his brothers and a co-worker when officers from the Montgomery County Police Department approached them for questioning.

As the interaction continued, one white female officer was heard using the n-word at the men. As shown in bodycam footage, she said: "Hey, you want to get out of here fast, right? So if we have more people, y'all n****** been trying to something." The officer then claimed she had been mimicking the men's language, saying: "What I am doing is repeating your words."

At least one of the men had used the same slur earlier in the altercation, saying that police were wasting time talking to them while ignoring that others in the community were being "robbed and killed." The officers took pictures of the men and ran checks on their IDs.

The bodycam footage from the police officer and a copy of Tucker's six-minute Instagram post was published by the department yesterday as the video spread online. "I couldn't believe it," Tucker told WRC-TV. "I could not believe it and I couldn't believe her face that she made. She thought it was actually a cool thing to say and it's not. She even said it was appropriate."

In response to the video, Montgomery County police apologized and said it takes allegations of racial discrimination seriously. It confirmed the incident remains under investigation.

"We sincerely regret the disturbing nature of this video," officials said. "We understand the pain such language causes the entire community. Our commitment to having open and honest communication with the community and providing transparent police service persists."

The four men were each cited for trespassing. Officers also issued two marijuana possession citations, WRC-TV reported. The name of the female officer has not been released.

"We are committed to serving all members of the community in a fair, impartial, and non-discriminatory manner at all times," police also said in a statement, published online yesterday.

"The matter brought to our attention today is disturbing and contrary to our department's values and our overarching mission to fairly and impartially serve our community.

"The statements observed on the social media video clip are contrary to our extensive training curriculum that include implicit bias training and other training programs to ensure fair, unbiased, and non-discriminatory policing in our community." The department noted "appropriate actions shall be taken in conformance with applicable laws and policy."
