Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho appears increasingly likely to send defender Matteo Darmian out on loan in January.

The Italian, 26, has fallen behind both Antonio Valencia and youth team graduate Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the hierarchy of right-backs at Old Trafford.

Darmian's most likely destination is Inter Milan, and Davide Santon, a prospective teammate at the Serie A giant, would welcome his arrival.

"I know Darmian, he's a friend. I like the rumors, he's a great player and a great guy," Santon, 25, told the website fcinter1908.it.

"If he comes he'll be welcome, the competition will be big. The competition will be for me, as for him. I'd be glad if he came, I don't think I'd leave."

Mourinho would like a center-back in January, believed to be Southampton's Jose Fonte, but he needs to sell before he buys. Darmian began his United career impressively but faded under Louis van Gaal last season and failed to take his chance to impress Mourinho against Feyenoord in United's UEFA Europa League defeat in Rotterdam on September 15.
