Maximalist: Shipwrecked Vintage Champagne For Sale
In 1916, a shipment of vintage 1907 Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Champagne was headed for the imperial court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia when it was torpedoed by a German sub amid the havoc of World War I. Miraculously, 2,000 extraordinarily well-preserved bottles of the bubbly were salvaged from the Gulf of Finland in 1998, where they had been aging gracefully for 80 years. Many have since been sold at auction, but there are still 10 bottles available for purchase at Moscow's RitzCarlton Hotel for $35,000 apiece (ritzcarltonmoscow.ru).
