Swedish McDonald's Gives Heartwarming 'Happy Meal Senior' to Grandparents

While grandparents seek to maintain social distance to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Swedish McDonald's restaurants have developed a new heartwarming way for grandchildren to share a meal with their older relatives.

A new ad from McDonald's Swedish franchises says that grandparents surprising their grandkids with Happy Meals has been a tradition since 1986, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and safe social distancing practices have prevented children from spending this quality time with their elders."[W]e let our junior customers turn Happy Meals into surprises for seniors," text shows on the screen before introducing the "Happy Meal Senior" concept.

The ad shows a small Happy Meal box-shaped booth outside the McDonald's stocked with hand sanitizer and art supplies. In it, kids can go in and draw whatever they like for their grandparents. Instead of a toy like the traditional Happy Meals have, the grandparents will receive the artwork that the children create for them. "We let kids create their own drawings, letters or other surprises and delivered them together with their grandparents' favorite meal," the ad says.

The commercial shows that inside the children can give the drawings to employees with an order to have them sent to their grandparents along with their favorite meals from the Golden Arches at no extra charge. "Thanks to our little ones, we showed that Happy Meal still lives up to its name. No matter the age," the ad said near the end.

The ad also shows a family video calling their grandparents while enjoying their meals at the restaurant, which is a nice way to act like their all enjoying the meal together despite keeping their distance to prevent COVID-19's spread. It also showed some of the drawings and accompanying meals that children had sent to their grandparents.

While the Happy Meal Senior campaign is certainly a sweet way for grandparents to enjoy a meal with their grandchildren during a difficult time for everyone, it's unclear if the service will come to the United States or extend to other parts of Europe.

McDonald's says it hopes to bring just a little more joy to grandparents' lives in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We wanted to let the kids surprise their grandparents with what they themselves love most, along with a surprise that we know the grandparents appreciate. We hope the initiative has made the lives of the grandparents a little more enjoyable," McDonald's Sweden senior marketing manager Sofie Lager said in a press release according to Design Taxi.

Newsweek reached out to a press contact for McDonald's for official comment, but did not receive one in time for publication.
