Mega Millions: How Many Million-Dollar Tickets Were Sold?

One lucky player won the jackpot in Tuesday's record-breaking $1.537 billion Mega Millions game.

A ticket purchased in South Carolina matched the winning numbers of and 5-28-62-65-70, as well as the Mega Ball number of 5. The player will claim the $1.537 billion jackpot, according to an official Mega Millions press release.

However, there were several other big winners on Tuesday night. According to the Mega Millions website, there 36 total second-prize winners, valued at $1 million.

"Eight were in California, four each in Florida and New York, two each in Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia, and one each in Arizona, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin," according to the Mega Millions website.

The million-dollar tickets would have matched all five white balls but not the gold Mega Ball.

The previous record Mega Millions jackpot of $656 million on March 30, 2012, was shared by winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland, while a $648 million jackpot was won in California and Georgia on December 17, 2013.

Mega Millions is a multistate lottery and one of America's two biggest lottery jackpot games. Jackpots start at $40 million, and other prizes pay from $1 million to $2 million or more with a Megaplier.

The odds of winning with a $2 Mega Millions ticket are one in 303 million.
