Mega Millions Numbers, Results for 01/28/22: Did Anyone Win $421 Million Jackpot?

The jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery for January 28 had swelled to a huge top prize of $421 million with a cash-value option of $289.5 million—but did anyone win the big one?

The numbers drawn were 3, 16, 25, 44 and 55 for the white balls, while the yellow Mega Ball was 13, and the Megaplier was 3, according to the Mega Millions website.

With the top prize growing for more than three months, finally the jackpot was won, with a ticket bought in Woodland Hills, California netting the enormous sum.

The jackpot had been rolling for 28 drawings since it had last been won in Arizona on October 22, 2021 when $108 million was up for grabs.

Mega Millions said January is typically a big month for jackpots. This time last year, a $1.05 billion jackpot was won by a four-player lottery club in Michigan. There were also other big winners in January in 2018 ($451 million in Florida) and 2019 ($437 million in New York).

There were four other big prize winners on Friday night who picked the five white balls. Ticket holders from Mississippi, New York, and Texas won $1 million each, while a ticket holder from Ohio managed to triple their money by playing the Megaplier for an extra dollar.

There were 30 winners of the $10,000 prize for matching four white balls and the Mega Ball. Six of those tickets had the Megaplier to triple their money.

Meanwhile, 715 winners matched four white balls to get the $500 prize, with 120 of them playing the Megaplier. In total, the January 28 drawing produced 1,167,183 winning tickets of at least $2.

With the jackpot finally won, the top prize has been reset to its current starting value of $20 million, ($13.7 million cash).

How To play

One of the country's most popular lotteries, the Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET.

In each drawing, five white balls are taken from balls numbered 1 through 70 while a yellow Mega Ball is taken from a set numbered from 1 to 25.

Tickets cost $2 per play and for an extra dollar in most states, there is the Megaplier option, which can increase non-jackpot prizes between two and five times.

In the event of the jackpot not being won, the money is added to the top prize for the following draw. When it is won, the top prize is reset.

Tickets are available for purchase in 45 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, they can not be bought in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.

The chances of winning with a $2 Mega Millions ticket are one in 303 million.
