How to play the Mega Millions lottery?

The next Mega Millions drawing will take place at 11 p.m. ET on Friday, January 10. To enter, players must purchase a ticket for $2 from a licensed lottery retailer. Players must choose five numbers between 1 and 70 for the white balls and one number between 1 and 25 for the Mega Ball.

There is an option to add a Megaplier to the ticket for an additional $1 per play. The Megaplier number is chosen just before the drawing and multiplies the original prize amount. For example, if the Megaplier number is 5X, and a player who uses the Megaplier wins $1 million, that player's prize will be multiplied to $5 million.

What happens when you win the lottery?

When a player wins the lottery jackpot, they have the option of claiming the prize as an annuity, which is made up of an initial payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments increasing by 5 percent each year. After 30 years, the player will have received the full jackpot amount.

Alternatively, a lottery winner can claim the cash option, which is of a lesser value than the full annuity jackpot but made in one payment.

Players have to claim prizes of $600 or more at official lottery offices, and prizes must be claimed within the same state the ticket was purchased. The lottery is available to play in 44 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Mega Millions lottery cannot currently be played in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada or Utah. However, Mega Millions and Powerball tickets will be available to purchase in Mississippi from January 30.
