Mega Millions Jackpot Amount

The Mega Millions jackpot starts at an estimated $40 million, though it could vary depending on how many tickets are purchased. Each time the jackpot is not won, it is increased by at least $10 million.

The biggest ever Mega Millions jackpot was $1.537 billion, which was won by a single ticket purchased by an anonymous player in South Carolina in October 2018. This grand prize is actually the second-biggest lottery jackpot, after Powerball's $1.586 billion, which was won by three couples from California, Florida, and Tennessee in January 2016. Each couple won around $533 million as an annuity or $327.8 million as a one-time cash payment.

When a player wins the lottery jackpot, they have the option of claiming the prize as either an annuity, which is made up of an initial payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments, or as a one-time payment, which is of lesser value but is paid in one go.
