The last person to claim a Mega Millions prize was a man from Illinois who won one million dollars after buying a lottery ticket in Iowa. Danny Lovett told lottery officials that he decided to stop for coffee at a convenience store in central Iowa and buy a ticket for the Mega Millions drawing on January 15.

“It just happened to be the right one, I guess,” Lovett told lottery officials. “So, it worked out for me.”

He purchased the ticket at the Kum & Go store in Colfax, Iowa, but didn’t check the numbers of the ticket until a few days later. He waited until February 4 to claim his prize due to the inclement weather in the midwest. He told lottery officials that he was stunned to learn that he had won one million dollars.

“You count and you count and you look and it’s like, 'There’s no way!’” Lovett told lottery officials. “Then you wake people up out of bed so they can see, too. It’s a great thing.”

Lovett, 60, plans on buying a house with his winnings and also putting some of the money away to save for retirement. He also plans on buying his family’s dream car, a 1972 Ford Mustang fastback.

“I’m going to get right on the internet when I leave here,” he said. “It’s just a car I’ve always wanted since I was a kid and never could have one. Now I can have one!”
