How to play Mega Millions?

To play Mega Millions, players must purchase a ticket that costs $2 per play from a licensed lottery retailer. They then choose five numbers between 1 and 70, and one number between 1 and 25 for the Mega Ball. Players can choose the numbers or let the lottery terminal randomly choose them.

Mega Millions draws take place every Tuesday and Friday night. The jackpot starts at $40 million and will increase each time the jackpot is not won. There are nine prize tiers, from $2 to the jackpot and the odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24. The odds of winning the Mega Millions lottery are always 1 in 24 regardless of how big the jackpot is or how many people purchase tickets.

What happens when you win the lottery?

Prizes of less than $600 can be claimed at most lottery retailers, but prizes of a higher value must be redeemed at a lottery office or the state headquarters. The length of time winners have to claim their prize varies by state but the limit is typically between 90 days and one year.

If a player wins the jackpot they can choose to claim their prize as either an annuity which is made up of an initial payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments or as a cash option which is made in one payment. The cash option is of a lesser value than the estimated jackpot but the player will receive it all in one payment.

Some states allow the winner to claim their prize anonymously, but public disclosure laws vary by state. If a jackpot prize is not claimed within the limit, each state will be returned the cash they contributed to the pot.
