Meghan Markle's Sister Reportedly Hospitalized After Paparazzi Confrontation Led to Car Crash
Meghan Markle's estranged half-sister Samantha Grant was hurt in a car crash after being chased by paparazzi Wednesday in Florida, according to the woman's boyfriend. The 53-year-old Grant, who is not close to Markle, was reportedly hospitalized with a broken ankle and a fractured knee.
Grant's boyfriend gave an interview to TMZ about the crash. According to him, the pair were driving near a toll booth when a photographer swerved in front of them in an attempt to take their picture. Grant and her boyfriend veered left in hopes of avoiding the approaching car, but hit a concrete barrier, according to the report.
Grant suffers from multiple sclerosis and was reportedly unable to lift herself up after the crash. The pair were taken to the emergency room, where both were treated.
Grant, who has not been invited to the royal wedding on Saturday, shares a contentious relationship with Markle, who is 17 years her junior. The mother of three has been outspoken about her ire for the actress and joked that she would be titling an upcoming book The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister. Following criticism, she backtracked and said the book will not be a tell-all.
Markle confirmed on Thursday that the pair's father, who had been invited to the wedding, would no longer be attending due to health issues. He underwent heart surgery on Wednesday.
"Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health," Markle said in a statement. "I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday."
Markle has tried to remain tight-lipped on her family in the days leading up to the royal wedding at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. Responding to rumors that Markle wanted her sister to stop giving interviews, Grant said that her half-sister was "out of her league."
"If it's about my life or my father's, there's something known in this country as freedom of speech. She doesn't have a copyright on that, and she's not gonna tell me that I can't speak about my own life or my father's when it's a matter of public self-defense. The media is disparaging us," Grant told the news outlet. "I'm not gonna take it. She's not qualified to suggest that I don't under any law in this country. This is not Great Britain. I am a United States citizen, and that's all there is to it. She's way out of her league to tell me I can't speak. I'm not saying anything about her, but if I'm talking about my life or my father's, she has to respect it."
Paparazzi interest in the royal family has led to tragedy before. In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash after being chased through a tunnel in France.
