Memorial Day on May 27, and the weekend preceding, it is a time for Americans to honor military personnel, veterans and those who have lost their lives during American wars.

Newsweek has pulled together discounts specially for the armed forces—active duty, reserve, veterans and their families—which can be taken advantage of during Memorial Day weekend.

Applebee's: Throughout May, select Applebee's restaurants are offering 10-15 percent off meals for active duty military and veterans. A valid military ID or proof of military service is required to be eligible for these offers. This includes Memorial Day. Contact your local restaurant for participation.

McCormick & Schmick's: Memorial Day means a free entrée for military personnel past and present.

7-Eleven: Through Memorial Day Weekend, U.S. military veterans can get a free medium coffee or Big Gulp. Vets can also link their VetRewards account to the 7Rewards app to take advantage of offers from both rewards programs. This includes a welcome offer of 800 additional points for joining 7Rewards.

Eyemart Express: The optical retailer is offering a 20 percent discount on eyewear purchases until the end of May. A valid military, dependent, retiree, or DD214 card can be shown to receive a discount.

Blue Star Museums: Memorial Day marks the start of military discounts for all Blue Star Museums.

Crayola Experience – Mall of America: Active and retired military can get into this event for free until the end of May. Must bring an ID or proof of military status, past or present, to redeem at the admissions desk.

Michigan's Adventure: On May 27, Michigan's Adventure will waive the regular admission fee for active and retired members of the Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve.

Mystic Aquarium: Throughout Memorial Day weekend, Mystic Aquarium is offering free admission for veterans and armed forces personnel. Family members will receive $10 off general admission.

Schlitterbahn Waterparks: From Memorial Day through to June 2, members of the military, police, firefighters and EMTs are admitted free.

Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach: Memorial weekend means that all military personnel, veterans, police officers and firefighters receive free admission to the park.

Costco: According to, active duty, reserve and veteran armed forces personnel and their dependents can get an additional $60 in savings when they sign up as new Costco members.

Fogo de Chao: Nationwide veterans and active duty military members will receive 50 percent off their meals at Fogo de Chao on May 27.

Home Depot: A 10 percent discount is offered in-store to military veterans on Memorial Day.

Hooters: Vets can get complimentary meals with the purchase of a beverage. Entrée options are available from the Memorial Day Menu and a valid ID is required to receive the discount.

Hyundai: Military personnel and their families can get $1,000 in savings from May 17 through to June 3.

Lowe's: Military Veterans receive a 10 percent discount on Memorial Day.

Walgreens: If you have a valid military ID and a Walgreens Balance Rewards card, you will receive 20 percent off eligible store items at Walgreens or Duane Reade drugstores on May 27.

Nike: According to its website, military personnel and their dependents can enjoy 10 percent off purchases.

Old Navy: The store offers 10 percent off to the military.

Apple: The technology company runs a program for active duty, veterans, reserves and their family members, which gets them 10 percent off most of their products.

Kohl's: The store offers active military, veterans, retirees and their immediate family members 15 percent off on Mondays in their stores.

Jeep: Military personnel can get $500 off purchases.
