The New York Mets will likely be in the market for help with their starting rotation this offseason, but could they trade one of their starters in the process?

The Mets had a disappointing season, to say the least. Despite boasting one of the highest payrolls in baseball, New York failed to reach the postseason, closing out the regular season with an 83-79 record. The Mets' starting rotation struggled this season, with third-year pitcher Kodai Senga struggling enough to get optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in September.

Senga fell apart in the second half of the season for New York. Though Senga was sent down to Triple-A, the 32-year-old still posted a 3.02 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 22 starts after missing almost all of the 2024 season due to injury. New York may be looking to add a pitcher this offseason, but The Athletic's Will Sammon reported that Senga is drawing trade interest from multiple teams.

"Senga is attracting trade interest from multiple teams, league sources said," Sammon wrote Monday. "Some clubs view Senga, 32, as an interesting buy-low candidate after he experienced an injury and ended the season in Triple A due to poor performance. It is unclear, however, how open the Mets would be to trading him, though they’ve had conversations about their starting pitchers, including Senga, people briefed on the talks said.

"Senga is a tricky evaluation. Relative to the starting pitcher market, his contract -- he is owed $28 million combined over the next two seasons with a club option for 2028 -- is reasonable. There is upside; in three seasons, he boasts a 3.00 ERA and finished in the top-10 for the Cy Young Award as a rookie in 2023. But there is also concern; he is particular about his mechanics, he is coming off multiple injuries over the last two seasons and he had a 6.56 ERA in the second half last season (eight starts). Also, Senga moved from a full no-trade clause to a limited one this winter, in which he can block trades to 10 franchises."

It will be interesting to see if the Mets are willing to part ways with Senga this offseason, but his contract restrictions make it more complicated. The 32-year-old hurler can reportedly decline trades for 10 different teams across the league, but the specific teams on his no-trade list are not publicly known. This limits the potential return the Mets can receive for Senga, so the team may be better off relying on the veteran pitcher to bounce back next season.
