September 16, 2019 marks Mexican Independence Day and honors the start of Mexico's War of Independence from Spain. To celebrate, Manhattan will be lighting up its streets with color, music and dance in a major parade over the weekend.

The parade takes place every year, as reported by MSN, with thousands of people attending in a celebration of Mexico and its culture.

As with any parade, they could be disruption for drivers and public transport, so Newsweek has provided a guide on how to get around on the day.

When is the 2019 Mexican Day Parade?

The parade will take place on Sunday, September 15 from 12:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. EST. It will start from Madison Avenue from 38th Street to 27th Street, forming between 5th Avenue and Park Avenue.

Mexican Day Parade 2019 street closures

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, the following streets will be closed Sunday, September 15 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the 2019 Mexican Day Parade.

  • 39th Street between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue
  • 30th Street between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue
  • Park Avenue (West Side Curb Lane) between 37th Street and 39th Street
  • Park Avenue (West Side Curb Lane) between 26th Street and 28th Street

For those looking to get to the parade on public transport, consider that other routes might be affected by the following road closures.

East 11th Street between 4th Avenue and 3rd Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

East 16th Street between Park Avenue South and Irving Place: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

West 21st Street between 11th Avenue and 10th Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

West 31st Street between 9th Avenue and Dyer Avenue: A full roadway closure for replacement of West 31st Street Bridge over Amtrak, beginning Friday, August 23, 2019 through Sunday, November 22, 2020. As a result, the following closures and traffic pattern changes will be in effect:

  • West 31st Street west of 9th Avenue to the mid-block will be closed to traffic
  • West 31st Street between mid-block and Dyer Avenue will be converted to two-way traffic for deliveries to mid-block addresses only
  • Work will be performed during the daytime between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m, though vehicular traffic will be detoured at all times.

West 33rd Street between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue: This street will be closed from Sunday through September 22, 2019 for tower crane removal

West 33rd Street between Dyer Avenue and 9th Avenue: This street will be fully closed until 10:00 p.m. Sunday to facilitate crane operation.

East 48th Street between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue: This street will be fully closed 10 pm Friday to 11:59 pm Sunday to facilitate crane operation.

West 50th Street between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

East 52nd Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for major gas installation / safeway

West 54th Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation.

West 56th Street 7th Avenue and 6th Avenue AKA Avenue of Americas: This street will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday to facilitate crane operation

West 58th Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

West 58th Street between 9th Avenue and 8th Avenue: This street will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday to facilitate crane operation.

West 68th Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

West 95th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for major gas installation

West 109th Street between Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

West 126th Street between Frederick Douglas Boulevard and Adam Clayton Powell Junior Boulevard: This street will be closed 10:00 p.m. Friday to 5:00 a.m. Monday to facilitate crane operation

West 132nd Street between 12th Avenue and Broadway: This street will be closed Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

Catherine Street between Henry Street and Madison Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to facilitate major gas installation

Rector Street between Greenwich Street and Trinity Place: This street will be closed from Saturday from 8:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. through September 29, 2019 to facilitate crane operation

Vandam Street between Greenwich Street and Hudson Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

Spring Street between Renwick Street and Hudson Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

Renwick Street between Spring Street and Canal Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

Elizabeth Street between Canal Street and Hester Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate crane operation

Eldridge Street between Broome Street and Delancey Street: This street will be closed Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for knuckle boom to hoist electrical equipment
