Michael Cohen's Lawyer Accuses Donald Trump's Attorney Rudy Giuliani of Witness Tampering
Lanny Davis, lawyer to Michael Cohen—former lawyer to President Donald Trump—accused Rudy Giuliani, current lawyer for Trump, of witness intimidation in an interview on Thursday.
Cohen recently pushed back a scheduled February appearance before the House of Representatives' Committee on Oversight and Reform, citing threats from the president as the reason for the postponement.
"Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen's continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by advice of counsel, Mr. Cohen's appearance will be postponed to a later date," Davis said in a statement this week. "Mr. Cohen wishes to thank Chairman [Elijah] Cummings for allowing him to appear before the House Oversight Committee and looks forward to testifying at the appropriate time."

"Calling out a man's father-in-law and wife in order to intimidate the witness is not fair game," Lanny Davis told @ABC News' @GStephanopoulos. https://t.co/gOLNEX6FwW pic.twitter.com/NbvARb6Vfd
Davis spoke with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America on Thursday.
"The president's allies are saying the real reason Michael Cohen backed out is fear of tough questions from House Republicans," Stephanopoulos said. "Your response?"
Davis responded:
"The last thing that Michael Cohen fears are partisan-hack questions from Republicans. We expect that. Let me be very clear. The House of Representatives now has an obligation, a resolution of censure, when the president of the United States indisputably intimidates and obstructs justice to prevent a witness from testifying, is in order. So is a federal, criminal investigation of Rudy Giuliani for witness tampering. Calling out a man's father-in-law and wife in order to intimidate the witness is not fair game."
Davis appeared to reference comments in which Giuliani had claimed Cohen's father-in-law might be tied to organized crime.
"I'm telling you, he comes from the Ukraine," Giuliani said on CNN over the weekend. "This reason that is important is, he may have ties to something called organized crime."
Trump has brought up Cohen's family on several previous occasions. Last week, for instance, the president tweeted a quote from Fox News and added a note about Cohen's father-in-law.
"Kevin Corke, @FoxNews 'Don't forget, Michael Cohen has already been convicted of perjury and fraud, and as recently as this week, the Wall Street Journal has suggested that he may have stolen tens of thousands of dollars....'" he posted. "Lying to reduce his jail time! Watch father-in-law!"
