'Midnight Mass' Ending Explained: Who Died and Who Survived Netflix's Latest Ordeal?

A horror has been unleashed upon Crockett Island in Netflix's Midnight Mass, and the isolated community don't quite know what's hit them until it's too late.

The drama begins with the arrival of Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), a priest who starts to lead their congregation following the mysterious illness of their former elderly clergyman, Monsignor John Pruitt.

But the priest is not who he seems and he has brought with him a dark secret that threatens more than just the residents' way of life.

Midnight Mass, as expected of a series from The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan, is drenched in blood and full of twists and turns.

Here is everything you need to know about how the show ended.

What happened at the end of Midnight Mass?

After revealing himself to be Monsignor Pruitt brought back from the dead, Father Paul tells the residents of Crockett Island that they, too, can have eternal life if only they believe in the power of God.

He introduces them to the creature whose blood gave him a new lease of life and says it is an angel, and persuades his first believer Sturge (Matt Biedel) to sacrifice himself and be reborn anew.

It works, and Sturge comes back from the dead because he has spent weeks drinking The Angel's blood in the Communion wine without realising.

Many of the other residents follow suit, drinking poison and reviving with a craving for blood, leading them to attack the others and make them vampires in turn.

Lead characters Erin Greene (Kate Siegel), Dr. Sarah Gunning (Annabeth Gish), Sheriff Hassan (Rahul Kohli), Annie Flynn (Kristin Lehman), Warren Flynn (Igby Rigney) and Leeza Scarborough (Annarah Cymone) all manage to escape the carnage.

The group decide to stop the other vampiric residents from getting off the island and turning the whole world into creatures of the night by destroying all the boats so that they can't escape.

Bev Keane (Samantha Sloyan), the most devout of Father Paul's followers, takes charge of the vampires and sets them on any resident not turned, and tells them to burn down every building except the church and its recreation center where they will stay safe from the sun.

This proves to be a fatal mistake though, as Greene, Gunning and Hassan manage to drench the buildings in gasoline and set them on fire before sunrise, an act that costs them their lives but will save the world.

With nowhere to go, the undead residents accept their fate and wait for sunrise to turn them into dust.

Warren and Leeza watch from a canoe safely out on the ocean and the latter says she "can't feel her legs" meaning The Angel has also died as she is once again paralysed from the waist down because its blood has left her system.
