Girl, 9, Shot in the Head at Birthday Party During Minneapolis Drive-By

An investigation has been launched after a 9-year-old girl was shot in the head at a birthday party in Minnesota.

The child is currently in a critical condition following the shooting which occurred on the 2200 block of Ilion Avenue in Minneapolis' Jordan neighborhood at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Police believe that a four-door red Ford was driving in an alleyway when someone inside the vehicle fired at the house.

The 9-year-old girl was playing in the front yard at the time and was struck by the gunfire. The child was rushed to hospital in a police patrol vehicle as officers could not wait for the ambulance to arrive on the scene due to the severity of her injuries.

Jackie Robinson said the party was for her niece's 9th birthday and the victim is her niece's best friend.

"So, we're just celebrating the birthday party, and all of a sudden, shots are coming towards kids on the trampoline," Robinson told WCCO.

Shawndreya Amerson, whose 5-year-old daughter was also at the party, described how she called her daughter on FaceTime afterwards to make sure she was not hurt.

"My daughter is 5-years-old. My daughter doesn't know what a damn gunshot is. She shouldn't even have to at this age," Amerson said.

"We can't even do anything regular anymore? Our kids aren't safe anymore?" she added.

None of the other children at the party were injured during the shooting.

Both Robinson and Amerson have questioned what Minneapolis City Council members and other leading figures are doing to stop the gun violence in the city.

"When do the people who are in charge take accountability? When does it happen? When do they step up?" Amerson said.

Robinson added: "I think that's messed up, you know, but this isn't the first time this has happened on this street."

Police are still searching for the suspect after they fled from the scene. Speaking to Newsweek, Minneapolis Police spokesman John A. Elder said there is no update to the "open and very active" investigation and that the girl remains in critical condition in a local hospital.

In a statement, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey's office said: "Mayor Frey's heart is with the family as they pray for their daughter's recovery. He is actively working with community and city leadership to reinvest in and rebuild community safety systems.

"He is also working with Northside leadership on new targeted initiatives to interrupt and crack down on the gun violence that is devastating families and our community as a whole."
