Missouri Teen Allegedly Mutilated, Decapitated Cat in Bathroom of Arby's Restaurant Where He Was Fired

A Missouri teenager is facing charges after allegedly decapitating and mutilating a cat in the bathroom of an Arby's restaurant where he used to work.

Tanner Maggard is accused of mutilating the animal on a baby changing table in the restroom of an Arby's and then waiting to see his former manager's reaction to the horrific scene in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit on Saturday, WDAF-TV reported.

According to the station, 19-year-old Maggard had worked at the Arby's until he was fired in June. Court documents say he had been fired after "setting fires" at the fast-food restaurant.

The Lee's Summit Police Department was called to the restaurant at 1027 N.E. Rice Road at 8.40 p.m. on October 19 after a manager reported finding a dismembered cat in the bathroom, The Kansas City Star reported.

The manager told police that Maggard had come in to the restaurant on Saturday and placed an order before heading into the men's restroom. According to WDAF-TV, when he emerged, he allegedly told the restaurant's manager: "Oh, I see you remodelled the bathroom."

Maggard reportedly returned to the bathroom shortly after that exchange. According to WDAF-TV, the manager told police that as he was cleaning in the bathroom he overheard gagging and coughing coming from Maggard in another toilet stall.

The manager told authorities that he exited the bathroom and Maggard later left the restaurant through a door near the restroom, the station reported.

Later, the manager returned to the bathroom to clean the stall Maggard had been in. He said he found the remains of a decapitated cat on the changing table for infants in that stall.

A large amount of blood had been smeared all over the stall, including on the toilet, walls and door, the manager told police.

The Arby's manager said he saw Maggard was sitting in his truck outside the restaurant when he came out of the bathroom. He claimed Maggard had been waiting to see his reaction to the bloodbath before driving off.

Police who responded to the incident said no foul odor was detected, suggesting the cat had been mutilated quite recently.

WDAF-TV said according to court documents Maggard denied multiple times that he knew anything about a cat when questioned by police.

The restaurant doesn't have any security cameras, the manager told the station.

That branch of Arby's had to buy a new baby changing table, a new toilet and had to repaint and treat the restroom walls, according to court documents.

Taggard has been charged with second-degree animal abuse and second-degree property damage.

"We are appalled by this incident and continue to cooperate with authorities as they conduct their investigation," a spokesman for Arby's told Newsweek.
