Mom Says She's Received Death Threats After 'Unpopular Parenting' Video

Some parents are stricter than others, but one mother on TikTok has received a barrage of criticism and abusive comments for a video about her parenting rules.

Mother of two Tara Huck shared a clip on October 17 listing her "unpopular parenting opinions" and it has already been watched 1.7 million times.

In the footage, which shows Huck in the front seat of a car, she explains: "I don't allow sleepovers. As long as school and chores are done, I don't limit screen time. If they don't eat what I make, they don't eat."

The video, which can be watched here, has attracted more than 130,000 likes and about 5,000 comments.

In a follow-up video shared on November 3, Huck said she had received "absolute hate" for her opinions, with some TikTokers even "wishing death upon me all because I don't allow sleepovers."

Although some commenters approved of her rules, many expressed outrage about the sleepovers.

One TikTok user called Kenzie wrote: "Kids deserve sleepovers. My bf said he missed out on a lot as a child because he didn't get to have sleepovers."

Amanda Garland added: "No sleepovers? Yikes. Those are some of my favourite childhood memories!"

Ameia Tacy posted: "I get the other ones but sleepovers? That's like a Karen thing."

Hailie Holm commented: "As a kid that grew up in a loving and safe home but with strict parents, kids just need a break from home sometimes, it's good for mental health."

Jeremybuenneke wrote: "You're going to end up with the kids that turn out to be really bad behind your back you're messing up girl."

One person, J_rose82, asked: "Did something happen or has this always been your decision? Just curious."

In reply, Huck made a follow-up video, which can be watched here, explaining: "This is another question that has been asked a couple times.

"It has also been implied by other people that I must have had something terrible happen to me, which is why I made the decision that I did—no.

"I was very fortunate as a child, my parents were not really strict, I had sleepovers when I was a kid, so nothing happened to me.

"Something doesn't have to happen to you, in order for you to make a parenting choice, I don't think.

"This is just a choice I've made based on things I've heard, things I've seen, people I've talked to, friends in different professions and honestly to me, as a mom, it makes the most sense, and I'm OK with that.

"It's a personal preference and an added layer to keep my kids safe."

Newsweek has contacted Huck for comment.
